This course will familiarize students with several key authors, such as Zora Neale Hurston, Alice Walker, Maya Angelou, and Gloria Naylor while providing historical background and analyzing relevant black feminist statements in order to gain a better understanding of how black women's lives are shaped by their position in society. Some poems, short stories and film sequences will also be included in this course.
In facing the burdens of double discrimination, not only issues of skin color but also of gender, African American women writers have developed a distinct category of literature that addresses the issues of race, class, gender and age among other topics. While they face similar obstacles to African American men, there are specific obstacles and rewards that African American women face in the U.S. society which they openly and critically discuss in their literary works. As such, their writings are often regarded as its own "particular" type of literature. What are these features and what specific social circumstances influence Black American women writers?
