This course provides a basic understanding of the relation between architecture and the city. Students will learn a basic vocabulary of urban design by developing a specific design project. Obtain basic knowledge and initial experience with the design process, in connection with getting to know and exercise development and presentation of an idea.

Superfluous Studio: Food for Thought

When being asked what architecture is, architectural theorist Jeffrey Kipnis answered with this statement;

Architecture is a set of effects, or what I would like to call games, that a few people have an exaggerated relationship to, and that are pursued with a kind of unjustifiable intensity for two reasons; it keeps the game going and that is its own justification but also as an after effect things come out of that to benefit other people.
An analogy would be; filmmakers make films to speak to other filmmakers and occasionally audiences like them.”

Each game consists of instructions and rules to be performed and Architecture, as well as Urban Design, is determined by certain arrangements and decisions. Kipnis’ gamesare those decisions that each architect makes for themselves. The word recipe, as well as game, suggests the concept of a written guide that requires the shaping of certain ingredients and the ways of putting those elements together to form a whole from parts.

If;
Architecture = Set of Games
Games = Set of Instructions + Rules + Components + Players
Recipes = Ingredients + Methods of Making them a Whole
Then;
What does your Architectural Cookbook consist of?

Each project will in turn explore mixed-use building typologies. This urban design project will be our figurative field. Through analysis and configuration, the elements collected form Los Angeles will be abstracted into architectural elements as components of the inidividual recipes.

Our Design Process will resemble instructions in games.

 The design process will consist of the several exercises:
1) Analysis of primary and secondary forms.
2) Abstraction of an existing building into a specific architectural design element.
3) Field studies of the relation of one architectural element to its figurative field.
4) Adoption to the Los Angeles site.
5) Production of the Architectural Cookbook (Treatment of individual design processes as instructions of a recipe and the rules and guidelines of games.)

This course introduces formal operations which define typological elements in architecture. The urban condition as the relation between one architectural figure and its figurative field will be explored as an overlap of the seven organisational tensions between inside-outside drawn by O.M. Ungers.

Evaluiert wird der kreative Umgang mit Feldorganisationen. Die Beurteilung erfolgt über den endgültigen Entwurf.

Will be discussed in class.
