Objective: The students gain deeper insights into the subject “technology and gender”, they understand the social and thus gendered aspects and interrelations within the field of technology / construction engineering. They learn to assess different gender related theories and to apply them to their field of work.
Content: Introduction: What are Gender studies? (terminology, central issues, theories) What are the questions gender studies in construction engineering are dealing with? What does the European strategy of gender mainstreaming stand for? Specifying the interconnection of technology and the social dimension of gender: faculty culture of technology, effects on job careers of female civil engineers. What is the impact of gender stereotypes on the decisions which career to pursue (input by a women engineer). Assessment of scientific findings concerning the sexual differences (ie capability of orientation, spatial imagination, physical strength, influence of hormones and genes) connecting these to professional requirements of an engineer.
