The aim of this course is to familiarise students with key concepts of postcolonial theory for the analysis of London fiction. At the end of the semester students will be able to apply postcolonial theories to the different phases of writing London and give answers to questions like: In how far does the city of London become a protagonist in these texts and possibly the backdrop for new identity formations? What does this imply in terms of the (gendered) mobility for the novels’ characters?
Immensely popular novels, such as Hanif Kureishi’s The Buddha of Suburbia or Zadie Smith’s White Teeth, focus on British children of migrants from diverse ethnic backgrounds. In the seminar, we will analyse these so-called “new ways of being British” and discuss them in the context of postcolonial writing and their gendered implications. How has the writing of London as a ‘multicultural city’ changed in the aftermath of 9/11 and 7/7? Novels such as Monica Ali’s Brick Lane and Gautam Malkani’s Londonstani will be discussed in relation to this new phase of writing postcolonial London. In addition to the close readings of the novels, theoretical material focusing on the gendered specificity as well as postcolonial theoretical writing e.g. from Homi Bhabha and Stuart Hall will be read. It is strongly recommended to read at least some of the novels before the new semester starts.
