The lecture will deal with the history of childhood in its dependence on gender order, the developments of the gender-specific division of labour, and patriarchal traditions in European history – such as: changes of gender order and its influences on the conceptions of childhood  due to industrialisation; the history of militarisation of the ideals of masculinity and the acceptance of drills as educational instruments; growing mortalilty rates of infants and children and the medicalisation of childhood as one of the consequences; the model of Hausfrau changing to that of the working mother; developments of declining birth rates resulting in changes both of children’s everyday life and the social construction of childhood.
