Aim of the course is the analysis of empirical micro-fields of current DIY-practice. Therefore, the students will define their research-fields by their own and follow their interests. Possible fields include: urban-gardening, bee-keeping, 3D-printing, DIY and Hardcore, Crafts etc.

The research will be conducted using anthropological and ethnografical methods, e. g. field-research, interviews, thick description, document analysis.

The focus of the course lies in a cultural-anthropological and ethnological perspective on recent fields of Do-it-yourself (DIY). The program will put under scrutiny the following issues:

- historical development of DIY

- gender-related aspects

- dilema between market and self-production

- practices of repair

- urban phenomena of DIY

- utopias and subversive practices of DIY

The course aims at combining practice-theoretical methods with discourse-analyses, thus combining the focuses on practices and discourses within the DIY-fields.

Writing of a paper focussed on the chosen empiricial case-study.

During the course: preparation of the scientific texts, active participation and engagement during discussions. Presentation on the findings of the field-research and of a short scientific text in one of the course-lessons
