For managing human resources, knowledge about what happens in firms and in labor markets is needed. In this course, students acquire the method equipment for gaining useful knowledge for the managing human resources. Applied human resource management research implies decisions about methods for data collection and analysis, about communicating findings to others and the consideration of legal and ethical aspects. This course is designed to enable students developing a solid understanding of decisions in doing applied human resource research. Students should be able to employ basic qualitative and quantitative methods for gaining insights on human resource issues and to evaluate the usefulness of existing information (e.g. from research projects)

Building on the position of pragmatism, we first elaborate how applied human resource research is able to produce useful knowledge. Due to this position, we focus on qualitative and exploratory methods in the course. We use contemporary issues and questions of managing human resource for familiarizing us with selected methods of data collection and analysis. Furthermore, we address the communication of findings as well as legal and ethical considerations.
