706875 VU Special Topics 3: Binary Systems in Astrophysics
winter semester 2021/2022 | Last update: 10.06.2025 | Place course on memo listThe students will gain advanced knowledge on the impact of binary systems in astrophysics, particularly on the multi-messenger aspects of interacting systems. Besides, they shall acquire practical skills in time series analysis applied to such systems.
Binary systems appear all across astrophysics. This course will cover from orbital characterization to multi-wavelength emission of interacting systems, including binary mergers, accretion and jet formation in X-ray binaries and particle acceleration in intra-binary shocks. Contemporary literature will be discussed, as well as time series analysis methods applied to real data.
Lectures will be accompanied by hands-on sessions of data analysis.
The assessment modus will be defined at the start of the terms.
Literature will be provided at the start of the terms.
Knowledge from experimental and theoretical physics of the preceding bachelor studies is expected, as well as basic programming experience.
For the hands-on session, the usage of a personal laptop is recommended/encouraged.
