In this design studio, students will increase and deepen their knowledge and experience with contemporary and advanced urban and architectural digital design processes. Successful students will organize, conceptualize, and develop their design thesis within a given design brief, taking their project through all design stages from early research and abstraction through design synthesis to representational drawings and models in order to present their final design to their peers, invited jurors and a public audience.
SYNTACTIC SKYSCRAPERS: TYPOLOGY VS. TRANSFORMATIVE CONTEXT
The topic of this semester’s master design course is to challenge the high-rise building as a traditional typology in the specific contextual setting of the inner-alpine city of Innsbruck.
To make high-rise buildings a suitable instrument for the challenges cities face today, its traditional characteristics need to be questioned, developed and adapted within the contemporary architectural discourse. Due to its location, embedded between two mountain ranges in the north and in the south, Innsbruck as a site for high-rise buildings is quite challenging. Not only environmental, thermal and climatic aspects but also political, social and aesthetic questions need to be addressed when thinking of high-rises in this particular place. A site close to Innsbruck Hauptbahnhof will serve as a testing ground for novel high-rise typologies and their local contextualisation.
In this studio, we will tackle the generic typology of the skyscraper and its archetypical elements, understanding it as a phenotypical object embedded in its architectural, economic, social and urban context. Questioning its systems and subsystems on a programmatic, structural, infra-structural, hierarchical and material level, the aim is to redevelop it as an ecologically and socially sustainable urban typology.
Students will work in teams of two to prepare their material and present it in weekly desk crits. Work includes research, analysis, and synthesis to deduct and organize one's ideas to form a coherent architectural proposal. Design research is conducted via digital and physical models. This design course is set up as a collaborative studio with a strong emphasis on collective learning via personal interaction and digital dissemination tools.
Lehrveranstaltungsprüfung gemäß § 7 Satzungsteil, Studienrechtliche Bestimmungen. Die LV ist ein Entwurfsstudio mit immanentem Prüfungscharakter.
Students' progress on research, model building, digital modelling skills and design will be evaluated week by week, putting the focus on specific milestones, such midterm review. Students will present their final design to a jury at the end of the year and submit this digital presentation for grading.
Final Grading will assess the quantity and quality of presentation, design, research, and models as well as the work and materials delivered during weekly reviews.
Wird im Rahmen der ersten Lehrveranstaltung besprochen.
A detailed studio brief and a short video will be published at the Faculty's webpage.
