summer semester 2024 | Last update: 20.11.2023 | Place course on memo listAt the end of this course, students will have a comprehensive knowledge of the essential theories, findings and methods of cultural psychology and will be able to analyse and critically examine cultural psychological research and assess the generalisability of psychological research findings. Students gain a better understanding of intercultural similarities and differences as well as the significance of these for the interpretation of general psychological phenomena and the application of these in intercultural contexts.
This lecture offers an introduction to the basic methods, theories and findings of cultural psychology, with a focus on social psychological phenomena. In the first topic block, we deal with the basics of cultural psychology (e.g. What is culture? How did cultural differences arise?). In the second topic block, we discuss individual processes in an intercultural comparison (e.g. personality, motivation, emotion). In the third thematic block, we conclude the lecture with a consideration of interindividual processes (e.g. living in multicultural worlds, interpersonal relationships, moral concepts) and mental health (e.g. culture-specific disorder patterns).
