Expanded knowledge and independent application of art-historical methods on examples referred to in the lecture

In South Tyrol and Trentino, there is an exceptionally high density of monuments of Romanesque wall painting. During the High Medieval Era these regions belonged to the bishoprics of Bressanone, Trento and Chur. From small village churches or cemetery chapels, to monastic church buildings, highly representative cathedrals and magnificent castles chapels, their frescoed decorations have different pictorial programmes and structures whose iconographic analyses reveal an enormous breadth of content. The pictorial decorations are directly linked to the metropolitan centres of artistic development in the Eastern Alps, which in northern Italy are closely associated with Milan and Venice/Aquileia, and in southern Germany and Austria with Salzburg in particular, but also with Regensburg. Together with the stylistic examinations, a highly complex and multi-faceted picture of this important high medieval artistic production emerges, determined by numerous influences.
