Graduates of this module shall understand the experimental mode of operation of physics by the practical execution of advanced tests. You shall have acquired the ability to carry out physical experiments independently and attained a recessed appreciation of the experimentally oriented mode of operation of physics and team ability and communication competence.

Solar spectroscopy, Diffusion cloud chamber, Properties of optical CCDs, Differential optical absorption spectroscopy (DOAS), Myon lifetime, Franck-Hertz experiment, Hall-effect and conductivity, Acoust-optical effect, Diode laser, Electron spin resonance, Gaussian beams and optical resonators, Elector-optical effect, Mass spectrometry, Emission spectrometry

This course consists of one experiment per week, for which you prepare based on notes, which will be available on OLAT. Before doing the experiment the instructor will check how well-prepared you are.

After the experiment you have to analyze the data and write a report that you submit via OLAT within 2 weeks (day of the experiment + 14 days, 24:00; we recommend to submit within one week). If your submission is late, 2 points will be subtracted per week of delay. Thus, if you submit 5 weeks or more late you will not receive any points for your report and the experiment will count as failed (see Assessment). If there are important reasons (illness, care obligations, death of a close relative) that prevent you from submitting your report on time, inform the respective instructor as early as possible and be prepared to give proof of your reason, to avoid the loss of points.

The rules of best scientific practice apply throughout the course. In cases of serious violations such as plagiarism (text, pictures, data that are reused without a citation and not identified as such) we retain the right to assess the performance of the offending group in the entire course with grade 5 ("nicht genügend", fail).

Your preparation and performance while doing an experiment can earn you up to 4 points (40 %) your report up to 6 points (60 %). To pass the course you need to pass at least 80% of the experiments. An experiment counts as passed if you achieve at least 4.5 points, which is only possible if you submit your report on time (see "Methods").

The overall grade is derived from the total numer of points. If you drop the course after the third week of term it will be graded as 5 ("nicht genügend", fail).

The notes for the experiments will be available on OLAT.

Successful completion of the compulsory modules Physics Laboratory 2, Physics III (quanta and atoms) and at least one of the courses of the module Physics IV (nuclei and particles).

Please register in the first LFU:online group only to simplify the coordination. The FP1 is an lab course with fixed groups of 2-3 participants each. Please name your favorite lab partners in the remarks on the registration form.

Despite the coronavirus pandemic, we currently plan on holding this course in presence on campus. This requires that everyone has a valid 3G proof for each appointment, strictly adheres to the distancing rules, and wears an FFP2-mask.

Participation in the experiments is only permitted as a complete group. If you cannot keep an appointment for an important reason (illness, care obligations, death of a close relative) inform your instructor writing (email) as early as possible and be prepared to give proof of your reason. If you miss an appointment without prior notice the experiment will be graded as 5 ("nicht genügend", failed).
