This module aims at expanding the study programme and at acquiring additional qualifications in the field of interdisciplinary media and communication research.

The VU contains in-depth contributions on the topic of media and trust at the Media Day 2025 “Trust is good, media is better?” (13.11.2025). For some years now, terms such as mainstream media, fake news, algorithms, AI and filter bubbles have characterized the public discussion about media. What they have in common is distrust or mistrust in the working methods and functions of the media. This year, our exploration of the relationship between media and trust focuses on the questions of how trust is created, how it can be lost and whether it can be regained. Why should we (be able to) trust the media at all? And what is the current state of trust in the media in Austria? The starting point for addressing these questions is an understanding of trust as a social practice that develops not only between people, but also towards institutions, technologies and narratives. The digital media landscape has given rise to new trust dynamics and shaken up the field of trust actors. Affect-based communication, social confirmation and algorithms are partially replacing traditional indicators of trust in the digital world. In social media, this situation is ironized with the incredulous comment “Source: Trust me, bro!”.

• Preparation of a report that reflexively links contributions to the Media Day with contributions from the Ring-VU

• A short audio(visual) interview with speakers of the Media Day or Ring-VU

The requirements specified by the respective curricula must be met.

Participation in the Media Day 2025 on November 13, 2025 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. is mandatory. The event will take place in the main University Auditorium (Innrain 52).
