Public history is a very broad term that encompasses all forms of public representation of history aimed at a wide audience. This can include commemorating historical figures or events in public spaces through monuments or street names, as well as staging the past in the form of historical reenactment, digital games, museum exhibitions, and city tours.
However, this type of publicly communicated history always gives rise to discussion – it becomes exciting when we ask ourselves why and when certain historical content was or is presented and used in a particular way. This makes public history a sub-discipline of history.
In this course, we will read and discuss texts on many facets of public history and reflect on its practical application – both in public space and in historical analysis.
Seminar discussions, oral presentation by participants, essay.
