703372 SE Research Seminar in Perception, Interaction and Robotics: AI/IIS
winter semester 2025/2026 | Last update: 29.08.2025 | Place course on memo listUniv.-Prof. Justus Piater, PhD Univ.-Prof. Justus Piater, PhD, +43 512 507 53264
Students completing this module will gain in-depth understanding in specialized areas of AI, machine learning and robotics (see content for topic details). They are able to engage with these topics creatively and methodically correctly to further develop their competence independently. In particular, they acquire the ability to actively participate in scientific discourse and in critical analysis and presentation of topics.
Building upon knowledge in learning algorithms and related topics, this seminar discusses recent scientific contributions and developments in Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, Machine Learning and Deep Learning, Perception, Computational Neuroscience etc. The topics are discussed in general as well as in the form of recent papers and/or applications. Selected current publications are presented and discussed in the group. The focus is on active participation in the discourse, on paper presentations as well as on critical examination of paper contents. This serves in particular as preparation for the future writing of scientific papers, prepare for future scientific presentations, and as preparation for in-depth studies of specialized topics. Specializations within the above stated topics may include Representation Learning, Deep Reinforcement Learning, Variational Learning Algorithms, Advanced Generative Models and Generative AI, Procedural Model Generation. Application domains may include general pattern recognition applications, computer vision and computer hearing applications (including enhancement, super-resolution etc.), man-machine interaction, computational neuroscience, etc.
For instance, assessment based on regular oral contributions of the participants as well as an oral presentation of a specific topic and a recent paper.
The seminar is suitable for Master students who want to advance their knowledge within the areas of perception, interaction and robotics. Knowledge of the topics of the previous elective modules is expected.
The seminar is organized in the form of a "Reading Club". The focus is on the in-depth discussion of papers and on presentations of selected papers.
