winter semester 2025/2026 | Last update: 12.09.2025 | Place course on memo listUpon completion of the course, the students should understand the physical basics and measuring principles of various atmospheric measuring devices. They should be able to independently select suitable measuring systems for corresponding applications in the future. Furthermore, they should understand how the physical measured variables (e.g., voltage, count rates) can be transferred to data acquisition devices (PC, Logger) and converted into the desired units.
The students learn the physical basics, the measuring principles and the technical construction of meteorological and atmospheric measuring instruments. Both classical measuring instruments, e.g., for determining temperature or humidity, and modern methods for determining atmospheric trace gases are covered. The latter include both in-situ (e.g., absorption spectroscopy) and remote sensing methods.
The course forms the basis for the associated practical course (PR Atmospheric observation methods and devices); accordingly, basic electronic knowledge is also taught here (e.g., basic electronic components, laws for series and parallel circuits, etc.).
Various methods of electronic data acquisition and transmission (analogue/digital) are discussed so that they can be applied in the practical course.
Graded presentations on topics related to atmospheric observation methods and final oral exam.
