Students develop skills in how critical analyses, theoretical strands or approaches can be derived from the positions presented.

 

In the course, students learn about the political, ideological, artistic and philosophical contexts of architecture, urban planning and landscape from the late 19th century to the interwar period.

The focus of the considerations is the topic of reform, i.e. the efforts of architects and other participants in socio-cultural discourses to introduce improvements to and in our (built) living environments.

This winter semester, the focus will be on Otto Neurath (1882-1945). Prof. John O'Neill from the University of Manchester will speak about the well-known public educator, economist, philosopher and urban planner in a guest lecture on 20.11.2023. John O'Neill is BritInn Fellow at the University of Innsbruck this fall. Title of his lecture: "Neurath in Manchester: planning, participation and human well-being".
