930012 VO Gender Studies as an Analytical Tool for Current Debates: Political Tipping Points. Feminist perspectives on current authoritarianization and fascication
winter semester 2025/2026 | Last update: 04.12.2025 | Place course on memo listStudents can apply theories, concepts and epistemologies from gender studies as tools to analyse contemporary social phenomena, transformations and problems. In addition, they are able to evaluate current debates, discussions and controversies in gender studies from a theoretical perspective and develop an independent academic perspective on them. After completing the module, they will have the skills to use gender as an analytical category for academic and contemporary debates and different research subjects and to present it coherently.
Our present is characterized by political tipping points: Attacks on democracy and human rights, authoritarianization, fascication and militarization are central elements of current political transformation processes. The lecture deals with these phenomena from a feminist-intersectional social science and humanities perspective and explores the question of how androcentric, Eurocentric, cisheteronormative structural logics of modernity come to a head in the current political tipping points. The lecture will cover the following topics, among others: global militarization processes in the context of a gendered postcolonial world order; the significance of anti-feminist, anti-queer and anti-trans politics for right-wing attacks on democracy; (digital) affective gender politics and the fascication of politics and society; the interaction of anti-democratic gender politics and climate politics in ideologies of right-libertarian tech billionaires. The lecture will also deal with queer-feminist, anti-racist, anti-fascist policies of democratization, with practices of solidarity, with counter-policies to authoritarian neoliberalism and with utopias.
