Upon successfully completing the seminar, students will be able to (i. a.)

• explain the fundamentals of how generative AI algorithms work (aspects that are relevant to writing and thinking);
• elucidate selected theories of critical thinking and literacy; and
• investigate and reflect on their own thinking behaviors and practices in writing using these theories.

Academic writing is a fundamental method for promoting critical and scientific thinking across all disciplines in higher education. Today, generative AI (GenAI) challenges whether and how writing can continue to fulfill its role in higher education. In this seminar, selected theories on critical thinking will be introduced, along with foundational knowledge about the functioning of GenAI algorithms relevant to writing and thinking. Additionally, students will investigate their own thinking behaviours and practices when writing academic texts and using GenAI.
