622008 PS Contemporary History: Queer spaces: exclusion, encounter and resistance in the 20th century
summer semester 2026 | Last update: 21.04.2026 | Place course on memo listAcquisition of basic skills in dealing with historical sources and representations of contemporary history, as well as the ability to present newly acquired knowledge in oral and written form; acquisition of elementary knowledge and application of relevant auxiliary scientific methods.
The persecution of homosexual and queer people was and is a history of exclusion, repression, and invisibility that takes place in and through spaces. Same-sex love was illegal in Austria until 1971, and until 1996 there was a ban on advertising, which made it difficult to portray queer life in public spaces. On the other hand, the appropriation and creation of (counter)spaces as places of encounter and resistance played a central role in the emancipation of homosexual and queer people. We trace the history of these processes in the 20th century and, with a focus on Austria, examine the significance of public toilets, bars, and clubs, as well as media platforms for queer movements in German-speaking countries.
