The seminar deals with the most important events in the history of Tyrol in the early modern period, with a focus on the areas of today's South Tyrol. Several significant events took place during the period covered: as a result of the Merano Diet, Sigismund of Tyrol renounced his lands in favor of King Maximilian I. in 1490, whereupon Tyrol was united with the Austrian lands. From then on, the four estates participated in the rule of Tyrol. Another turning point occurred at the beginning of the 16th century: in 1525, peasants led by Michael Gaismair rebelled against the prince-bishop of the diocese of the same name in the small town of Brixen, triggering a regional conflagration of peasant uprisings. With a few exceptions, the violent riots were almost exclusively confined to Tyrolean areas south of the Brenner Pass. This list could be continued for the entire early modern period. These are local events that took place in South Tyrol and which also represent turning points. They brought about upheavals throughout the entire country, even beyond the region, and continue to have an impact to this day.
The historical evaluation of these events is the subject of this proseminar. One need only think of Michael Gaismair's portrayal 500 years later, his glorification as a brave peasant leader who rebelled against the injustices of his time and suffered martyrdom as a result. In this proseminar, early modern events and turning points in South Tyrol will be systematically examined, and the associated historical narratives critically questioned.
