Students are able to handle simple design and planning tasks. They are able to analyze a design task, to formulate an architectural program, to create a spatial concept and to translate it into an architectural design of a high aesthetic level. You are able to develop, present and present a project.
Group 0: Dorfoase- Judith Prossliner
In times of profound social, ecological, and technological transformations—shaped by global crises, armed conflicts, and increasing societal polarization—the question of how we live together must be reconsidered.
How and where do people encounter one another today? What kinds of spaces does a society need to enable community, foster exchange, and create a sense of identity?
The design studio E2, titled “Village Oasis,” explores the village as a social and spatial structure in transition. The focus lies on questions of community, encounter, and the role of architecture in times of societal change. Using the municipality of Wildermieming as a case study, students develop spatial strategies and interventions for places intended for shared use. Architecture is understood not as a finished object, but as a process that emerges through use, participation, and appropriation. The aim is to develop a critical stance and translate it into concrete, socially effective design proposals.
The design studio is conceived as an experimental laboratory between theory, design, and real place. We engage with village structures, human–space relationships, and participatory processes, develop concrete spatial strategies for communal places, and test them through prototypical models
Group 1: Design Studio: Superblock. Superfuture.
Description:
Architecture plays a crucial role in shaping resilient urban ecosystems and requires new forms of collaboration to address contemporary environmental challenges. This design studio explores the Alpine Superblock as a transformative approach to co-create climate-adaptive urban quarters that prioritize social well-being, ecological performance, and shared public space.
The studio is conducted in close collaboration with Studio LAUT, the practice leading Superblock implementation in Vienna and Innsbruck. Through this partnership, students engage directly with applied planning strategies, policy frameworks, and design intelligence emerging from ongoing Superblock projects.
Focusing on Innsbruck as a case study, students investigate how reorganizing city blocks through reduced vehicular traffic, expanded pedestrian zones, and integrated green infrastructure can mitigate heat islands, improve air quality, and support multispecies urban life. Working with human and artificial intelligence as cooperative agents, students develop adaptive architectural interventions that activate public space, strengthen the ecological and social fabric of the city, and reimagine the future of climate-responsive urban quarters.
Course environment:
Students work collaboratively in groups, with 15 participants from the University of Texas at Arlington and 15 from the University of Innsbruck.
Alpinestudio International Program:
The Alpinestudio International Program is the global campus of the University of Texas at Arlington and the University of Innsbruck, focusing on climate-resilient cities in the Central Alpine Region. In 2026, the program theme aims to address the question: How can architecture act as a change agent for urban climates?
Course examination according to § 6, statute section on "study-law regulations".
Will be discussed in the first lesson.
Group 0 will be in German. Start 04.03.26
Group 1 will be in English. Start 03.03.26
