Knowledge of the reception of classical literature in Italian Humanism; understanding of the phenomena of imitation and innovation in Renaissance Latin poetry.

Basinio da Parma is a relevant figure of Italian Humanism who combines, in his works, the imitation of classical models with a high degree of innovation. Through the study and direct reading of his works, students will reflect on the processes of reception of the Classical tradition in the Renaissance.

Lectures on the imitation of classical models in Italian Humanism and on Basinio da Parma’s literary production. Guided reading and in-class translation of relevant passages from Basinio’s works, together with comparisons with classical models.

Written exam consisting of the translation of a Latin passage and open-ended questions.

Selected articles and book chapters will be provided by the instructor.
