The ability to explain and evaluate theoretical and methodological paradigms in literary studies and key literary theories; Developing an awareness of the coexistence and ongoing differentiation of literary-theoretical and methodological conceptualisations; cultivating the ability to reflect on hermeneutic and semiotic processes and to independently develop theoretically and methodologically grounded approaches to literary texts using the terminology of literary studies.

According to Duden, a book is described as a cult book if it captures the spirit of a generation or a section of society and is therefore held in particular esteem within that group.

As part of a lecture series, cult books are presented, primarily from German-language literature, ranging from J. W. Goethe’s *Werther* and Hermann Hesse’s *Steppenwolf* to Brigitte Schwaiger’s *Wie kommt das Salz ins Meer*.

Until further notice, successful completion of PM 7 (VO2: Theory, Methodology and Systematics of Literary Studies) is no longer a prerequisite for admission to PM 10 and PM 13 (in accordance with the 2015 curriculum for the Bachelor’s degree programme in German Studies).
