This course examines empirical and theoretical problems in ethology, using important texts in the development of science. Applicants should have good ability in English.
The point of departure is the scientific method in Charles Darwin's Theory of Evolution (1859) and the course moves on to the topics of the study of instinct (Niko Tinbergen, 1951, 1963), the modification of behavior (Konrad Lorenz, 1965), the genetical theory of natural selection (George. C. Williams, 1966), parental investment and sexual selection (Robert Trivers, 1972; George C. Williams, 1992), reciprocal altruism (Robert Trivers, 1971), chimpanzee behavioral diversity (Boesch, 2000) and life across geological time (Southwood, 2004).
Students will work with original texts both to understand the content and master the necessary vocabulary. Pairs of students will make a presentation of an aspect of the course.
Evaluation will be made on the basis of a final examination, the presentation, and class participation.
Photocopies of the course materials can be obtained from ISI. Stasis (G.C. Williams, 1992).
