This course focuses on the politics in Austria since restoration of sovereignty with the State Treaty of 1955. There will be a cursory overview of the history of Austrian government (e.g. Holy Roman empire of the German Nations, constitutional monarchy of Austria-Hungary, the First Republic to 1938, restoration of the parliamentary democratic Austrian Republic in 1945), before turning to the politics of Austria since 1955 with an emphasis on current affairs.
Covered topics include: the structure of the Austrian republic, the Austrian parliament, the Austrian political parties, the Austrian federal president, Austria and the European Union, religion and politics in Austria, some differences between American and Austrian politics, the three Austrian Jubilees of 2005, and politics in Tyrol.
Students will prepare and present in class a short presentation on an approved topic and meet for question and answer sessions with local and regional representatives of several parties (e.g. at City Hall in Innsbruck and at the Tyrolean Statehouse).
Students are expected to attend class sessions, prepare and present an individual report on a pre-determined topic, and take a written final exam. A composite of attendance, preparation and participation, mid-term evaluation, class report and final exam determines the final grade.
Readings in the form of hand-outs, publications in the internet and texts on reserve include mandatory readings listed each week on the syllabus and additional recommended readings.
Time and place to be announced.
This course is open to University of Innsbruck students.
