An examination of selected topics in the Humanities drawn from contemporary issues in fields including but not limited to the arts, culture, economics, and politics as they relate to the human condition. Lectures and/or discussions featuring local experts in the area of study. May be repeated for credit (total of 6 credit hours).
Gender equality means access to rights or opportunities unaffected by gender. However, the rights or opportunities need to be understood within specific cultural contexts. This course gives students a foundation to understand the meaning, functions and elements of gender equality from an intercultural and global point of view.
Students compare three contexts of gender equality namely: Africa, Austria and their own. Major themes on gender roles, social and political status, as well as type and positions in the workplace will be presented. First, students will be assigned various readings to help them understand the complexity of gender equality when situated in specific cultural contexts. Second, students will visit the UNHCR office in Tyrol Austria to explore whether gender equality is considered for services offered to refugees, such as access to education, types of employment offered to refugees from Europe and Africa based on gender. Third, students will explore gender equality in various positions within global manufacturing factories such as BMW (for cars) and MED-EL GmbH (manufactures and design for hearing implants) in Innsbruck. Such examination will give students a unique perspective regarding gender equality by comparing the quantity of female and males holding various positions in such factories. Additionally, a trip to Dachau to examine leadership positions held by male and females in that concentration camp will give students a rare opportunity to interpret gender equality in times of unusual political situations. This exploration will enable students to situate interpretations of gender equality from a broader perspective. Lastly, drawing from the readings and their findings, students examine cultural ideals that inform and shape their own perspectives of gender equality. By the end of this course, students will gain a deeper understanding of interculturalism considering gender equality; be encouraged to identify ways they can value and take steps to reflect gender equality; as well as celebrate gender inclusivity whenever possible in various aspects of their education and future careers without undermining their own worldview.
