This course in Austrian culture focuses on music:  from Mozart to the Sound of Music and beyond.  A viewing of portions of The Sound of Music will provide the foundation. We will then transition to the cultural roots and history behind The Sound of Music. Music has always played a huge role in Austrian history and culture. Throughout the course, music will be the lens to learn about Austria.  Topics for this summer: How Austria became an international music and cultural center; Mozart and the Royals; Beethoven and revolution; Austrian musicians and nationalism; Late 19th-century music for a Late 19th-c empire; multiculturalism at 1900; Austrian music and World War II; Austria and the global pop music scene.
