At the end of the course, students will be able to:

• Implement the broad outlines of research data management (FDM) for a scholarly project, identify and overcome challenges. They will be able to write data management plans (DMPs), select appropriate repositories, prepare research data FAIR, select appropriate licenses, and know best practices in research data management.
• Optimize scientific data visualizations for publications, talks, and posters.

Along the Research Life Cycle, we will both theoretically elaborate and practically test the essential aspects of research data management. One focus will be on data management plans (DMPs): We will evaluate existing DMPs, write our own, and learn about electronic tools for doing so. Another important aspect of the course is the FAIR preparation of research data. This includes publishing data in ("trusted") repositories and dealing with metadata (findability). Furthermore, we will address access regulations for research data according to the principle "as open as possible, as closed as necessary" (accessibility). Under the aspect of interoperability we will deal with file formats and standards for the creation of (meta)data. To ensure the re-usability of research data, we will address quality control, documentation and licenses.

In visualizing scientific data, we will cover: 

• Introduction to graphical concepts for data visualization.
• Criteria for optimizing scientific data visualizations
• Colors and color scales
• Visualization of multidimensional data and time series
• Concept of "small multiples
• Various examples (data with statistical uncertainties, correlations, distributions)
