Wintersemester 2024/2025 | Stand: 29.07.2024 | LV auf Merkliste setzenUpon the successful completion of this course students understand the basics of creating, managing and analysing spatial data used in Databases and in Geoinformation systems. They acquire the ability to use selected methods in relational spatially enabled databases (SQL) and Geoinformation systems and are capable of creating or accessing geodata to use them for tasks within their field of study.
Geographic data is present in many daily used applications like navigation/routing apps and location based services but also in scientific questions where the location of some phenomenon is of relevance like the spread of COVID-19 in a country. Digital maps can convey complex information in a short time. In combination with temporal information animated maps add another dimension.
The different forms (vector and raster) of spatial data with their characteristics will be explained together with the use of coordinate systems. Different methodologies of data acquisition are presented: primary: like GPS, photogrammetry,laser scanning or radar techniques; secondary: like scanning and georeferencing of maps or use of data sources available on the web. Another core part of the course are the functionalities of Geoinformation Systems and databases to acquire, manage, analyse and visualise geographic data. The analysis of raster data will include applications to digital elevation models and reclassifications. Vector data analysis like buffering, network analysis, calculating distances or topological relations between different vector data sets will be discussed. In the visualisation section the basics of visualisation through legend creation for vector and raster data will be presented and specific forms of geographic visualisation like heatmaps or charts will be exemplified. Publicly available geospatial resources are presented and their properties will be discussed. Examples for GIS applications from humanities, natural and technical sciences will be outlined and the potential of automating analysis or visualisation tasks using Postgres and/or QGIS will be discussed. Students will acquire practical skills to create, manage, manipulate data in Postgres and visualise/analyse them in Geoinformation systems through the exercises and a mini project that has to be presented. The main players in Geoinformation Systems and Geodata will be presented like ESRI and QGIS.Presentation of lecture slides by lecturer to provide a summary of learning material; using exercises in the class for hands-on exercises working with databases and geodata. Working on mini projects and presentation of results by participants.
Participants are graded through marks of oral exams for the lecture part and in-class presentation of classroom exercises and mini projects. Details will be announced in the first session.

It is recommended but not required to use your own laptops/computers for hands-on exercises. No prior skills in programming languages are required, as the practical exercises are SQL-based. Therefore, basic knowledge of relational databases and SQL is desirable, e.g. from the 198822 VU Introduction to Data Management.
Students advanced in completion of the Minor Digital Science get precedence.
