Familiarity with topics and debates in philosophy of the sciences; ability to critically engage with the concept of science in one’s own discipline.

The decisive factor in determining whether a discipline can be represented at a university is its scientific character. What criteria must disciplines meet in order to be called “science”? What is the relationship between the so-called humanities and the natural sciences? What does a scholarly engagement with religions look like, for example? Which disciplines play a role in this, and what are their methods? Can theology even be considered a science? How does theology differ from religious studies? In this course, we will discuss these and other questions—questions that are also highly relevant for anyone who wants to know whether the subject they are studying can truly be considered a science.

Discussion based lecture.

Final oral exam.
