In its first part, the course will introduce into the historic evolution and the main characteristics of European labour and social policy with the purpose of providing the basis for the further analysis of European labour and social law measures and their impact and effectiveness at national level.

In its second part, the course will address specific Italian, Austrian and German cases in order to deeper investigate questions of national effectiveness of the EU social and labour law measures. In this regard the course will discuss different decisions of the European Court of Justice. This case-based approach allows to address central issues of EU labour and social law (e.g. the free movement of workers, the coordination of social security systems, the employment services, the collective dismissals, the retirement age in the public sector, etc.).
