Venus and Mars? The US, Europe and the Iraq War

After September 11 and especially after the Iraq war, the relations between the US and Europe have become strained. The seminar will focus on: - The perceptions on both sides of the Atlantic (e.g. Robert Kagan’s picture: The US sees the world as Mars – Europe sees it as Venus) The interpretation of the different perceptions (e.g. trigger-happy Americans versus naïve and opportunistic Europeans; e.g. unilateralism versus multilateralism) The consequences of the perceptions (e.g. strengthening the capacities of the EU, especially of the European Security and Defence Policy – ESDP; e.g. the possible end of NATO’s functions)

Every student is required to participate actively in the seminar, presents his/her paper at a specific day and delivers his/her final version of the paper at the end of the term.
