The course will aim at not just mediating a basic information on the current social status of women in CEE countries as expressed in statistical data, on the legislation and state policies, on women´s mo-vement after 1989 etc. Given the specific cultural and political framework of these countries in pre-communist, communist and post-communist history, emphasis will be put on various attempts of theorizations of these contexts, which should prevent the reading of the data on the base of western cognitive structures and make a more adequate interpretations possible. The third level of discussion will form the methodological reflections on the meanings and possibilities of an East-West gender comparisons themselves. Mainly Central European material will be used (Czechlands, former GDR, Poland, Hungary) - students will be provided with a collectionof about 25 articles in English and a detailed syllabus.
