Students can discuss and explain the key theories and concepts of governance and political leadership, including the empirical conditions and manifestations of various political systems. Furthermore, they can compare and evaluate various forms and problems of governance and political leadership in diverse contexts.

Chancellors and Chancellorships in Germany and Austria

This seminar is devoted to the chancellors and chancellorships of the Second Austrian Republic and the Federal Republic of Germany. Starting from a critical appraisal of different conceptual approaches to the study of governments and political leaders in the executive branch, and an analysis of the political and institutional contexts in both countries, the focus will be on assessing the performance of individual chancellors and their governments from a comparative perspective.

qualitative methods (vergleichende Methode; documentary analysis, secondary analysis etc.); when writing term papers, students are free to chose from the set of different methods learned in the specialized methods classes
