This course of lectures and seminar will consider critical and contemporary issues in the sociology of economic life. The course aims to balance theoretical perspectives with substantive social analysis: we therefore will focus on both core conceptual approaches to the social study of the economy, and key social and economic changes in contemporary capitalist societies. Topics considered will include: states and markets; markets and economic order; markets and social structures; economic rationality; capitalism and globalisation; production and work; post-industrialism and post-Fordism; class and inequality; economic insecurity and social exclusion. These sessions will draw on key thinkers and debates within economic sociology, and will examine perspectives from related fields such as politics and political economy, anthroplogy, and economics. In this way, we will apply a range of debates to the analysis of current socio-economic issues.
