This course will focus on the mediation of economic processes and gender arrangements. Classic and contemporary economic sociology has paid very little attention to questions of gender. By contrast, there is a large body of work within feminist scholarship, which has taken issue with gender inequality in the labour market and the household division of labour. Since the late 1980s and 1990s feminist economists have begun to question the conceptual foundations of the neoclassical legacy in the economic disciplines (i.e. the model of homo economicus). However, these debates in turn have hardly brought into view how gender relations and identities are implicated in, and remade through, consumption and consumer culture. The course aims to develop perspectives on the mutual constitution of gender arrangements and economic institutions in global capitalism.
The course will deal with conceptual issues (e.g. the relationship between households, states and markets; the feminist critique of the neo-classical legacy). Recent debates around gender segregation and inequality in the labour market will be discussed in the broader context of global capitalism. Further topics include anthropological perspectives on exchange and material culture, the social meaning of money in domestic relations, and the significance of cultures of consumption for the formation of gender identities.
