The students acquire the competence to apply methods of social sciences in concrete case studies. - The introductory seminar course (PS) “Applied Methods of Social Sciences” serves, in accordance with the seminar on the same topic, to train and apply empirical methods. By means of a practical case students handle on their own all phases of a research process: formulation of the research question, survey and analysis of data, elaboration of a research report (Curriculum, §5).

We will discuss research designs like observations, survey and content analysis based on (qualitative and quantitative) case studies and relevant literature. Furthermore we will choose own research questions in groups and will explore them with proper research method, starting with an outline for our survey instrument, followed by different forms of data collection, interpretation and presentation of the results.
