The introductory seminar course (PS) “Applied Methods of Social Sciences”, in combination with the lecture on the same topic, trains the students in applying empirical methods. The students will be able

- to make a reasonable selection of empirical methods

- to understand the different principles of methodical approaches

- to project and validate a research design

- to realize their own research design

- to prepare and elaborate their own data

- to analyse the own research results

- to reflect the own research process critically

The mains topics of the course will be within the realm of rural sociology. Further the investigation of landscape perception will be a main issue of the course.

During the course different methods of survey methods and analysis will be introduced and exemplified by the students themselves and the instructor, e.g. on-site visits, participant observation, semi-standardized questionnaires, interviewing, group discussion, reflexive photography, qualitative content analysis and documentary method. The methods will be applied by the participants in the research field. The students will present their insights and outcomes and in the ensuing discussion we will focus on the appropriateness of the methods used to the research field. The students will outline and interpret initial results of their analysis in a research report.

Continuous assessment, based on regular written and/or oral contribution by participants, an oral presentation and a research report.
