Curr. 2021 § 5 (1) 15: This module serves to deepen selected subject areas of sociology. The students specialize in one or more subject(s) and acquire in-depth knowledge in them.

This course is dedicated to the phenomenon of crime, the way society deals with it and the discourse on explanations of deviant behaviour. The societal approach to crime will be examined not least on the basis of available data on reported crime and its treatment by the instances of criminal justice control, as well as on the basis of examples from research practice. The explanations of criminality to be discussed range from rational decisions, personal predispositions, social structural causes and socialisation aspects to social control and criminalisation processes. We are particularly interested in the implications for crime policy that can be derived from the respective explanatory models or, conversely, which understanding of crime is visible in crime policy developments.
