419010 VO Principles and fields of application of the sociology of law and criminology
winter semester 2024/2025 | Last update: 11.10.2024 | Place course on memo listStudents know and understand important content-related concepts and theoretical references as well as the central fields of application of the sociology of law and crime. They are able to analyze and critically reflect on social phenomena and discourses on law, deviance, crime and security from a social science perspective.
The lecture imparts knowledge of central concepts, focal points and fields of application of the sociology of law and crime as well as social science research on security. The seven double units will be designed in cooperation with other researchers of the institute, but also with external researchers or practitioners on different topics:
- Introduction to the sociology of law: Sociological perspectives on the law – social functions of the law (Hemma Mayrhofer)
- Introduction to criminal sociology, social security research and police research (Walter Hammerschick)
- Between endangerment and particular legal protection: Legal subjects in "total institutions" (Hemma Mayrhofer)
- Research on the penal system (Walter Hammerschick/Veronika Hofinger)
- Radicalization and extremism (Veronika Hofinger/Hemma Mayrhofer)
- Legal mobilization and legal consciousness (Andrea Fritsche/Florian Riffer)
- Environment, climate change and human rights (Monika Mayrhofer)
Two double units of 90 minutes each are reserved for each thematic block, whereby theoretical approaches and discussions will be combined with the presentation of empirical studies and the discussion of application-oriented aspects (including guest lectures).
Lecture supported by slides & discussion
Written exam in the last unit (second half) with open response format to check content understanding (i.e. no multiple choice response formats).
Literature relevant to the exam will be announced at the beginning or during the semester.
