Students should be able to identify the main issues of Critical Management Studies (CMS) and to reflect on its implications for key topics like power, subjectivity, identity, discourse, organizational change, ethics and emancipation. Basic Readings should enhance understanding of contemporary issues with relation to classical texts and questions of social science.
The lecture will (1) give an overview to Critical Management Studies (CMS) and discuss its strengths as well as criticism to it. Thus we also have to discuss the relevance of critical social science in general. After this introduction we will (2) do a couple of Basic Readings of authors (Marx, Weber, Adorno, Foucault, deCerteau) who might not be necessarily linked to the CMS-label, nonetheless whose influence to this stream of research has been crucial. In a third part (3) we will illustrate these theoretical outlines within contemporary issues like Post-Bureaucracy, Self-Management, Aesthetics and Ethics.
