This course introduces PhD students to existing research and current theoretical debates in the rapidly evolving field of organization theory and strategy in the context of sustainability and grand societal challenges. Students will become familiar with key research areas and fundamental research topics on (or at the intersection of) strategy, organization, and sustainability. Students will be motivated to identify gaps in current research and develop own research questions.

In addition, the seminar provides an opportunity for students to deepen their competences in academic writing and reviewing. Students can use the seminar to clarify and discuss questions on theoretical perspectives, research designs, and the fit between theory and appropriate research methods.

Through a series of interactive seminar sessions, this course enables PhD students to critically engage with seminal research papers as well as novel research projects. In each session, we will jointly discuss specific research papers, typically 2-3 papers in each session. In some session, we will have invited guest speakers to share and discuss their latest research projects or working papers with you.

Topics include corporate purpose and sustainability; Stakeholder governance adaptation and value creation; Organizational learning for sustainability; sustainability reporting; contested industries in the wake of grand societal challenges.
