This course is part of the module 'Principles of Financial Economics' (together with 434.400), which introduces the key concepts of financial economics. Broadly speaking, financial economics can be sub-divided into three core areas: Financial markets, financial institutions, and corporate finance. This course will focus on the third area. Corporate finance covers the analysis of decisions which occur in modern corporations. These are related to financing, investment, payout and corporate control decisions.
The course will review the major developments in the theory of corporate finance starting with the Modigliani-Miller results. Subsequent work has stressed the importance of market frictions, such as agency problems, asymmetric information or transaction costs. The course will highlight the importance of these issues for corporate finance decisions.
