Students gain a good overview of the functions, location and history of the int'l financial centres. They know about the gold standard, Bretton Woods and other exchange rate systems and know how to use derivatives (especially options and SWAPs) in currency markets. Students learn about globalization and Chinas role in the global economy as well as about the reasons why some nations prosper and others fail. Furthermore, int’l payment systems, tax competition and financial transaction taxes are discussed. Student gain knowledge in the field of international economics and business and the ability to analyze, discuss, and solve business and economic challenges in an international context.

n the seminar students will prepare a presentation on a topic in int’l finance. During the discussions after the presentations I expect and demand active participation by students. Each student from outside the euro-area should prepare a presentation of his/her home country with a focus on their exchange rate regime (floating, pegged to another currency, etc.). Inflation and exchange rate stability of the country should be discussed, as well as its trade balance and periods of turbulence (if any).

Students from a euro-zone-country will get a list of possible presentation topics on relevant issues in int'l finance (also own suggestions are welcome)
