After completing the module, students should be able to: - Understand the basic concepts of crisis and crisis management; - Understand the nature of human error and organizational failure; - Develop operational definition of crises; - Understand the nature of cognitive errors within complex systems; - Analyse critically complex issues in the context of organizational failure; - Recognise the processes of crisis incubation within organizations; - Be familiar with the consequences of crisis events within organizational settings; - Understand the roles stakeholders plays in crisis prevention and management; - Define crisis typologies; - Understand and identify frame of references within crisis context; - Understand the concept of perception in the context of crisis management; - Be familiar with the complexity of crisis decision-making processes and their implications to crisis resolution. - Identify and develop communication strategies for crisis period; - Design crisis management strategies; - Be familiar with the concepts and development of business continuity planning and strategies.
Crisis is a common feature in business today. Recent major crises had devastating consequences to the environment, financial well being of companies involved, and to humans (in some cases, even future generations were implicated). Despite the fact that crises are on the increase in both developed and developing worlds, not much is known about this phenomenon. This course is intended to introduce crisis management techniques and technologies and to advance knowledge on their applications. Course Topics: - Crisis - Historical Perspective - Crisis Characteristics - 1980's and 1990's - Business Crisis Concentration - 1990's - Crisis Trends - 21st Century - Major Characteristics of Crisis - Concept Definitions - Crisis Sources and Origins - Crisis Consequences - Organisational - To Management (Personnel) - Crisis Anatomy - Crisis Typology - Crisis Incubation - Crisis-Prone Organisations - Crisis-Prepared Organisations - Stakeholder Management in Crisis Situation - Crisis Decision-Making - Operational Model of Crisis Management - Crisis Communication - The Role of Organisational Communication in Crisis Prevention and Management - Business Continuity * Crisis/Risk Management Simulation Exercises - Computer lab __________________________________________________________________ The course utilises a wide range of illustrative videos and other media. A crisis management model (decision support system) is also presented and discussed. Students are required to do a series of case studies in order to sharpen their analytical and management skills in crisis management.
Students will be assessed by their active participation and courseworks.
