By the end of 30 hours course, the students are expected to have a sound understanding of: 1. Describing how his or her cultures influence way he or she communicates with others. 2. Knowing the element of cultures and its differences across cultures including world-view, individualism-collectivism, gender roles, power distance, and values. 3. Applying the principles of communication in the context of diverse culture. 4. Conflict management and resolution in different cultures.
The course is designed to introduce knowledge of fundamental principles of cross-cultural communication from the fields of social psychology, cultural anthropology and communication theory and the application in the practice of business communication.
Session-1 ( 3 hours): Introduction: Understanding Culture and its role in business communication. Session-2 ( 3 hours): Culture: Theoretical perspectives ( Trompenaars) Session-3 (3 hours): Culture: Theoretical perspectives ( Hoffstede) Session-4 (3 hours): Values : Theoretical perspectives ( Schwartz) Session-5 (3 hours): Principles of Communication Session-6 (3 hours): Tools of Communications (non-verbal communication, body language, eye contact, gestures, touch) Session-7 (3 hours): Business Negotiation with China Session-8 (3 hours): Conflict Management: Japanese Style Session-9 (3 hours): Case Study-1 Session-10 (3 hours): Case Study-2

1. Fons Trompenaars. Riding The Waves of Culture. London: Nicholas Brealey Publishing, 1997 ( or later edition). 2. Geert Hofstede and Gert J. Hofstede. Cultures and Organizations: Sofware of the Mind. New York: Mc-Graw-Hill, 2005. In addition to the required text-books, the student will also read a number of articles from journal and book-chapters.
