Students will understand the context within which international business is conducted and how managers of large and of small firms orchestrate their businesses to take advantage of the benefits of doing business internationally.
There are advantages for firms, large and small, in doing business internationally. However, when firms undertake exchange across national borders, complexities arise for the management of these firms because countries differ geo-politically, culturally and socio-economically. Exchange across borders is conducted fundamentally as trade and as investment, but there are many ways in which trade and investment can be organised in international firms. These forms of business activity are being innovated upon as the worldwide context changes through globalising forces and as firms create new forms of enterprise through their internationalisation efforts. Issues that confront managers of international, and of internationalising firms, relate to the internal operations of these firms and also the manner in which these firms impact on the environments in which they do business internationally. What are the effects of globalisation on firms doing business internationally; what are the strategies these firms use when they move away from their domestic markets; how is international production and other aspects of the value chain organised internationally; what does going international entail for the firm and how does the firm change as it does so; how are international transactions structured; how can international business be undertaken when countries lack hard currency reserves necessary for orthodox exchange or when regular markets are lacking or do not exist ? These and associated international management issues are explored to better understand the complexities of doing business internationally.
