At the end of this course you should become comfortable in your ability to discuss the following questions in any strategic situation that you might encounter. 1. Which segment do I want to play 2. How can we compete 3. Who is the customer 4. What do they want (that others do not know) 5. How do we win 6. What capabilities do we need to win Note that I'm not saying that you'll be able to come up with an answer right off the bat. However, you should be able to ask the focused set of questions based on the context of the business that can lead to a dialogue for examining multiple options before you decide on a direction.
BUSINESS MODEL INNOVATION Designing Business Models: Customizing from Common Patterns In most companies the process of designing business models (see below) is an ad hoc process and in my opinion and inefficient process. In this course you will learn a systematic but iterative process to do this. We will expose you to some broad categories of business models and internalize the basic logic of how to make money in each of these categories. The first step is to recognize which of these categories is most applicable to your business. The second step is to customize these broad patterns to the specifics of the business at hand. This seems easy because everything is in English and there are no hard formulas to figure out. However, unless you discipline yourself to systematically go through a structured process (there are other equally valid processes than the ones you'll be exposed to) it is very easy to fall into the ad hoc trap. You will internalize this process by applying it over a wide range of business situations that'll give you confidence in its applicability to any business opportunity. After the completion of this course you should be quickly able to draw the outline of a business model for any business opportunities that you're considering. This outline will allow you to generate focused questions where facilitated discussion can be used to fill in the details of the business model discussed next.
Case Discussion-Based Learning and Teaching Materials Pedagogy: The bulk of the learning will be through in-class interaction. To access the online material you will need a broadband connection. Participation: If you have thought through an issue and communicate that idea to the class it will be relatively easy to get a good grade in participation. What I would like you to do is try to stay with the discussion thread as much as possible. If you feel that that some new threads need to be introduced, use your judgment because sometimes these are very valuable. I will sometimes take a comment outside the current thread and discuss it as a sidebar but more often I will come back to it later. Preparation: If you have not prepared the case then it is not a good idea to ‘wing’ it. Provided it is one class session during the semester, just let me know if you are not prepared if I call on you. This brings me to my style: I do call on class members, providing you the chance to share your ideas if you have not had an opportunity before.
Grading: Evaluation will be based on the following distribution. More than two absences (each 1.5 hours) during the course will be detrimental to your class participation grade. • Class participation1: 30% • Group presentation: 10% • Exam: 30% • Project: 30%
Course Material: A case packet would be made available. Books: Failsafe Strategies. Sayan Chatterjee, Wharton School Publishing, 2003.
