Nachdenken über den Stand der Gesellschaft heute
From Socrates to G.K. Chesterton, who used the question as the title for a book in 1910, the philosophical answer to this question is that people do not reflect enough upon what is going on around them and what they/we are doing. The aim of the course is to raise questions where the currently are none (or precious few). The premise is that there are lots of areas where our problem is less that we think falsely about things but that we do not think about them at all. We simply accept the status quo. “Why don’t children in our society work?” What should a penal system accomplish?” These are but two examples of issues we could raise but in fact do not. In this context Gilles Châtelet’s Vivre et penser comme des porcs (Living and Thinking Like Pigs) with its sweeping condemnation of the Americanization of European culture, presents abundant material for discussion. The course will take the form of an open discussion in English with oral presentations by the participants. The number of participants is limited to 16. Eligibility to participate will be determined on the basis of a short examination in the first session of the course.
